Walter Ullrich, Jr. of Piscataway, has left to be with his darling granddaughter Kayla, on Monday, October 23, 2023. He was 86. Born on April 26th 1937, Walter was raised in Port Richmond, Staten Island. He moved to Piscataway in 1972.
Walter led a very active life. He served in the New Jersey Army National Guard for 37 years. While serving he attained the highest rank Enlisted as Command Sargent Major E9 and proceeded to be promoted to Chief Warrant Officer CW4, the highest WO Rank at that time. One of his duties was serving as the Command COM-SEC Inspector for Three States. That responsibility required the highest Security Clearance possible, and he was one of the few people to hold that title.
Walter’s civilian life included working for Foley Caterpillar in Piscataway for 36 years, where he was a pioneer in developing the CAT on Highway Truck Engine business. While working with Caterpillar he became the first truck engine business manager in the country and the first Cat Dealer person chosen as the Charter President of the newly formed Dealer Advisory Team. He retired in 1996, after 26 years in management. After retirement he continued selling trucks as a Heavy Duty Truck Sales Associate with MTC Kenworth and later with Gabrielli Kenworth.
He was very active in Piscataway as a member of the CERT team, a Police Citizens volunteer and a graduate of the Civilian Police Academy. He was a longtime member of the Metlar-Bodine House Museum in Piscataway and enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Walter and his wonderful wife Rose Ann were married for 66 years and raised three sons. They met while competing in roller skating competitions. They started skiing at the age of 50 and became avid skiers up until recently.
Walter hopes to reclaim the missing pieces of his heart and soul that his darling granddaughter Kayla took with her as they are now together again for all time. He’s also predeceased by his parents Walter and Sally (Kirkwood) Ullrich Sr and his beloved Aunt Vennie, who helped raised him.
Surviving is his wife Rose Ann (Vitkovits) Ullrich, his sons Mark of Forked River, Scott of Piscataway and Gregory of Forked River; and his daughter-in-laws Jane and Kathleen. Walter would not forget his four legged son Hamilton who will be with him when he too crosses the Rainbow Bridge.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, October 29th, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N Main St.-at Riva Avenue, Milltown.
