Seymour Silverstein

January 7, 1928 — October 12, 2017

Seymour Silverstein of East Brunswick passed away on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, at Parker Nursing Home in Piscataway.
An Army veteran, long-time engineer at RCA and General Electric, president of his credit union, accomplished woodworker, and founding member – along with his wife, Gloria (Katz) Silverstein – of the East Brunswick Jewish Center, Seymour was born in the Bronx, NY, 89 years ago, the oldest of five children born to Edward and Fannie Wittlin Silverstein.
He grew up in Brooklyn, attending Brooklyn Technical High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946, serving as a military policeman at the time of his discharge in 1947.
After his discharge, Seymour enlisted in City College of New York, graduating magna cum laude with a degree in mechanical engineering. He went on to earn a degree in electrical engineering from CCNY and master's degree in management science from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey.
He joined RCA in the early 1950s, a design engineer in a company that pioneered transistors. He became a global troubleshooter and was on the editorial board of RCA Engineer magazine and stayed with the company through the acquisition by General Electric. He was part of the team that designed the radio tower on the Empire State Building and the lunar landing module. Seymour retired in 1988, after more than 30 years.
As Seymour's career was taking off, he and Gloria moved to their East Brunswick home in 1957. The couple was among the founders of the Jewish Center in 1958. Seymour was president in 1967 and chairman of the Constitution Committee for 20 years.
Survivors include Gloria, his wife of 66 years; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Silverstein and Randolph Walerius of Washington, D.C.; sons and daughters-in-law: Richard Silverstein and Elizabeth Lloyd-Owen of London, UK, and Mark and Anneke Silverstein of Antwerp, Belgium; brother Dr. Alvin Silverstein of Lebanon Twp., NJ, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 16th, 11:00 am, at the East Brunswick Jewish Center, 511 Ryders Lane, East Brunswick. Interment will follow at Floral Park Cemetery in South Brunswick.
