Seymour Schaffner

September 21, 1931 — December 17, 2020

Seymour Schaffner, age 89, passed away at his home in Peabody, Massachusetts on December 17, 2020.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Rose Gabe Schaffner and Theodore Schaffner, Orthodox Jews who both immigrated from Poland as young adults. After graduating from Utrecht High School, Seymour briefly studied at City College of New York, and then pursued a career in business. He first took over his father's cabinet business in Brooklyn and eventually started his own kitchen cabinet business in New Brunswick, New Jersey which he continues to run, even today, from the other side.

In 1963 he married Judith Laszlo, an immigrant from Hungary. They settled in East Brunswick, New Jersey where they raised three daughters.

Seymour was an avid reader who enjoyed foreign travel. He could speak several languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Yiddish, and German. In recent years he studied Mandarin.

Seymour is predeceased by his wife Judith who passed away in 2016. He is survived by his sister Sylvia Schaffner Kleinman Roth, his brother Murray Schaffner, his daughter Sue Schaffner and daughter-in-law Liz Rosenberg and grandchildren Maizie and Rufus Schaffner, his daughter Leslie Moody and grandsons Blake and Logan Moody, his daughter Debra Schaffner and daughter-in-law Julie Wyman.

He will be buried beside his wife Judith at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, New Jersey.

Although secular in religious practices and beliefs, Seymour was connected to his Jewish heritage through Yiddish culture. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Kinderland (a summer camp founded in 1923 by Jewish union activists on the belief that Jewish culture includes a responsibility to social justice), where his grandchildren Rufus and Maizie have joyfully spent their summers.

Arrangements are by The Crabiel Home For Funerals, 170 North Main St., Milltown New Jersey. You may sign online condolence guestbook at www.crabiel.com
