P.V. Varughese

Mr. P. V. Varughese was born on March 2, 1934, in Eraviperoor, Kerala, India, to Mr. V. C. Varkey and Mrs. Aleyamma Varkey. He was the fifth of six children in the Plamkoodathil Vattamparambil family.

He completed his schooling at St. John’s School in his hometown before graduating from Union Christian College, Aluva. He later earned both his B.Ed. and M.Ed. degrees. During his university years, Mr. Varughese was a passionate sportsman who captained the football (soccer) team and competed as a pole vaulter in track and field.

Mr. Varughese began his career with the State Education Department as a high school teacher, serving in several locations including Elanthoor, Wayanad, Meenangadi, and Kozhikode.

He later moved to Kafanchan, Nigeria, where he worked as a chemistry lecturer for 20 years. His passion for sports continued there, where he served as an official for both football and track and field programs. In 1988, he returned to Kerala and settled there permanently.

A true go-getter throughout his life, Mr. Varughese was known for his energy, discipline, and determination. He was a man who never walked slowly, always moving with purpose and intention. He also had a deep love for travel and adventure, visiting more than 20 countries and building lasting friendships across the globe.

He married Grace Varughese in 1959, and together they built a loving family rooted in faith, kindness, and community. Following his wife's passing in 2009, Mr. Varughese moved to New Jersey, where he lived with his son, Geogie.

Mr. Varughese will be remembered for his warm spirit, generous heart, and genuine love for people. He had a remarkable ability to connect with others through shared family histories, hometowns, and mutual friendships. His life was defined by integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to helping those around him.

P.V. Varughese is survived by his 3 children: Geogie and his wife Geetha Varughese (NJ), Beena and her husband Alex Chacko (IND), and Asha and her husband George Vargis (UAE); his Grandchildren Dr. Jacob Alex and his wife Dr. Sonam Jacob (IND), Dr. Varghese Alex and his wife Dr. Minu Sarah Paul (IND), Joshua Varughese (NYC), Dr. Rachana George and her husband Jim Mattaapalil (UAE), and Ria Grace Varughese (NYC); and his Great-grandchildren Ethan Alex and Gabriel Alex.

Viewing and Condolences will be on Saturday, May 16th, 9:00 am - 11:00 am, at St. Stephen's Mar Thoma Church, 423 Dunham Corner Road in East Brunswick. Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am with Burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery in North Brunswick.  Arrangements are by The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N Main St.-at Riva Avenue, Milltown.  You may sign the online condolence "guestbook" at www.crabiel.com .
