Marilyn (Rosenthal) Gordon, 89, of Milltown (formerly of Staten Island, NY), passed away Friday, March 2nd, at Specialty Hospital of Central Jersey. She was born February 6, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY to Lena and William Rosenthal and lived in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn in her youth. Marilyn met her future husband, Melvin Gordon, after his return from service in WWII. They married in July 1947 and were married for over 70 years. The Gordons lived in Brooklyn with their daughter Ellenye until 1966, when they purchased a home and moved to Staten Island. Marilyn worked for years as a key punch operator, first for Lentheric, a division of Squibb, and later for Haskins & Sells, an accounting firm. In 1988, Marilyn and Mel purchased Richmond County Ambulance in Staten Island and owned and operated the business for over 23 years, before officially retiring.
Marilyn will best be remembered for her joie de vivre and feisty demeanor. She loved to spend time with family and remain constantly on the go. She enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader. Friends referred to her as "Mary Sunshine," as she especially loved the beach and the water and often brought the good weather with her wherever she went. Marilyn was a deeply caring person and often went out of her way to help others whenever she could.
She will also be remembered for her sincere love of animals, as she and her husband Mel worked with the Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare to rescue animals in need of loving care. She was a devoted wife, incredibly loving mother and an admired grandmother. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
Marilyn was predeceased by her husband, Melvin (d. December 2017) and her brother, Alfred Rosenthal. She is survived by her daughter Ellenye Gordon-Rickert and her husband Andy Rickert of Milltown, and her grandson Jeffrey Rickert.
Funeral service and entombment will be held Friday, March 9th, 12:30 PM, at Mt. Sinai Cemetery & Mausoleum, 374 Rt. 79, Morganville. Friends and relatives may call on Thursday, from 7:00-9:00 pm, at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N. Main St., Milltown. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would greatly appreciate contributions to the Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare (SICAW), PO Box 120125, Staten Island, NY 10312, or goo.gl/BIyA3J.
