Margaret M. (Doerr) Stetzko, of Milltown, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her daughters, on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerset. She was 97. Born and raised in Milltown, on Riva Avenue, to John and Christina (Funk) Doerr, she lived in Milltown her whole life. She graduated from New Brunswick High School and was a member of their chorus group. She loved singing.
Margaret worked for the American Red Cross and Atomic Energy Lab in New Brunswick, as an executive secretary, until her marriage to Steve Stetzko in 1952.
A woman of great faith, she was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church in Milltown. She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Margaret volunteered at Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen in New Brunswick and Meals on Wheels. She was active with the Milltown Senior Citizens Club and participated in their aerobic classes.
She enjoyed her vacations at Ocean Beach, Lavallette NJ, with family and dear friends the Tarentiles. Margaret and Steve took a cross-country road trip when he retired and visited Margaret’s brother Gary and his family in California. They enjoyed spending time in Cape Cod visiting Steve’s family. They also spent a lot of time with their grandson Andrew, which they enjoyed very much.
Margaret loved animals, especially Teddy, Sey, Rudy, Peace and Violet. She loved sending cards to family and friends to let them know how special they were to her. Her family lovingly called her the “card lady”. She enjoyed reading the newspaper every day, doing crossword puzzles and word searches. She loved watching the Yankees and Jeopardy.
She’s predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Steve Stetzko who passed away in 2017. She’s also predeceased by her siblings John, Joseph, Charles and Gary Doerr, and her sister Marie Eilers.
Surviving are her loving daughters Christine Stetzko of Old Bridge, Beverly Polcou (Donald Caruso) of North Brunswick, Jeanne Stetzko (Charles Horberg) of Hillsborough and Karen Albretsen of Old Bridge. She was a special Grammy to Andrew Horberg and his wife Alanna D'Avanzo-Horberg. She also thought of her sister’s sons George and Michael Eilers as her own after her sister’s passing. There are many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends who were so special to her.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 3rd, 10:00 am, at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church in Milltown. Friends and relatives may visit with the family from 9:30 am until the start of the Mass at the church. Burial will be private on Monday, November 6th, at Brig General William C Doyle Veterans Memorial Park in Wrightstown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Our Lady of Lourdes or Elijah’s Promise, 211 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
