John Walter Lewis, 78, of North Brunswick, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026. Born on September 22, 1947, in Youngstown, Ohio, John lived a life marked by curiosity, dedication, and a deep commitment to family and community.
John’s academic journey began at Rutgers University, where he earned a BA and MA in history. His passion for learning led him to pursue additional postgraduate studies in history. This intellectual foundation shaped his approach to life and work.
Early in his career, John thrived in the fast-paced world of advertising and market research. He held positions with Clairol, Ted Bates Advertising, and L'Oréal/Lancôme in Manhattan. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Mary "May" Lewis. Together they built a life filled with love and shared adventures.
At the age of 40, John made a bold decision to leave the corporate world behind and embark on a new path. He founded JW Lewis Construction, a home remodeling company that became a testament to his intelligence, work ethic, and determination. Over three decades, John poured his heart into building not just homes but also lasting relationships with clients and colleagues.
John’s passions extended far beyond his professional life. A devoted fan of Rutgers Men's Basketball, he was a season ticket holder who cherished attending games and practices. His enthusiasm for the sport fostered warm connections with coaches and players alike.
As a father to three sons—Daniel, John Ryan, and Evan—John was deeply involved in their lives. When they were young student-athletes, he volunteered as a travel soccer coach for several years. His mentorship extended beyond his own family; he welcomed Evans Ofori from Ghana into their circle as part of the extended Lewis family.
Travel was another source of joy for John. One unforgettable highlight was the family’s trip to Brazil in 2014 to attend the FIFA World Cup—a cherished memory that reflected his adventurous spirit.
Later in life, John continued his legacy of mentorship by supporting another young man from Ghana, Desmond Boakye Tanoh. With John's guidance and encouragement, Desmond pursued and achieved his dream of becoming a medical doctor in the United States. He remains an integral part of the Lewis extended family.
John is survived by his beloved wife May; his sons Daniel (Mary Jo), John Ryan, and Evan (Jenny); his brothers Howard Lewis and Mark Lewis (Susan); as well as many others whose lives he touched through friendship and mentorship. He was predeceased by his parents Howard and Emily Lewis and his brother James Lewis.
Those who knew John will remember him as friendly, honest, curious, hardworking, and an exceptional conversationalist who could connect with anyone he met.
May John Walter Lewis’s memory bring comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him. A Memorial Gathering will be held on May 2, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 03:00 PM at Crabiel Home for Funerals 170 North Main Street at Riva Avenue, Milltown, NJ.
