John "Chip" Chapman

John “Chip” Chapman, of Somerset, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2026 at home. He was 81 years old. Born in East Orange, he was raised in Middlesex Borough before moving to Somerset 50+ years ago.

Chip was a beloved science teacher. He taught at Highland Park High School from 1971-1994. While in Highland Park, he coached track and cross-country, served as Athletic Director, and advised for the Ski Club and Ecology Club.

He was a Science Department Supervisor in Middletown and West Milford, where he retired. He also volunteered at the NJ Science Convention for many years.

Music was his passion, and he was a talented and multi-faceted musician. He sang with the Rutgers Glee Club while attending Rutgers University, with Philomusica Choir, and, more recently, the Reformed Church of Highland Park Chancel Choir. He was a member of the bluegrass band, St. Elmo’s Fire, and enjoyed jamming with friends. Chip was an avid birdwatcher and a member of the NJ Audubon Society. He enjoyed golfing, skiing, and game nights.

Chip loved to spend time on Cape Cod, where he enjoyed sailing, running in and spectating at the Falmouth Road Race, and quahogging. He enjoyed traveling and recounting his memories of being in California and the Philippines while in the Peace Corps. He traveled with choirs to Czech, England, and Italy. And, he toured Ireland with friends and Austria and England with family.

Chip held on to his lifetime friendships. He loved life and being with his friends and family.

He is predeceased by his wife Judith Walker Pastorio (d. 2019), and his parents Cressel and Mae (Beauman) Chapman.

Surviving are his children, Jennifer Chapman (Robert Roslewicz) of Highland Park, Rebecca Chapman-Smith of Middlesex, Robin Pastorio-Newman (Steven Sorg) of Highland Park, Carin Rencher (Gregg) of Flemington, and James Pastorio (Betsy) of Stevenson Ranch; his sister Rosemary Heilman (Paul) of Williamson, NY; 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and nephews and nieces.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 12th, 11:00 am, at Reformed Church of Highland Park, 19 South 2nd Avenue. Family and friends may visit with the family starting at 10:00 am.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the NJ Audubon Society, The Reformed Church of Highland Park, and to Philomusica Concert Choir.
