Joan A. Collender, of Monroe Twp., passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at home. She was 74.
Born in Brooklyn, she grew up in Long Island and lived most of her life in East Brunswick, before moving to Monroe 12 years ago. She graduated from South River High School and received her bachelor's degree from Rutgers University, in Social Work.
Joan was a social worker for Middlesex County Board of Social Services before retiring. She enjoyed sipping tea and reading. But most of all she loved her family.
She's predeceased by her daughters Kathleen Nigro (d. 1997) and Karen Young (d. 2011); her parents James and Jeanette Collender; her sister Maureen Walmsley, her brother James Collender and her brother-in-law Thomas Ebinger.
Surviving is her son Richard Mayer and his wife Lisa, of Jackson; her daughter Kristine Mayer of Monroe Twp.; her sister Laraine Ebinger of Texas; her son-in-law Michael Young of Old Bridge; her brother-in-law Lester Walmsley of Hightstown; 10 grandchildren – Amy, Michael, Jennifer, Kaitlyn, Ricky, Brittany, Joseph, John, Ryan and Logan and 10 great grandchildren; her niece and nephew Sara and Roy Ebinger, and 3 great nephews.
Friends and relatives may call on Wednesday, May 30th, from 3:00 – 7:00 pm at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N Main St-at Riva Avenue, Milltown. A Blessing will be held during the visitation at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joan's name to the American Society of Hematology or Foundation of Sarcoidosis Research.
