Inez R. Adkins, of Perth Amboy, passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at JFK Hospital in Edison. She was 89.
Born in Cordele, Georgia, to Freeman and Emma Brown Smith on December 25, 1931. Inez received her high school diploma from Gillespie-Seldon Institute, Cordele, GA. in 1949. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Albany State College in GA. In 1953 where she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (1951). She received a Master's Degree from Trenton State College in 1977.
On October 24, 1955, Inez was married to Albert Adkins Jr. and together they had 5 Children, Adrian, Adolphus, Angelo, Angela (Anita) and Alex.
Inez started her career in Education in Eatonton, GA. moving on to teach in Washington State and Massachusetts. In 1964, Inez moved to Perth Amboy to continue raising a family. In 1972 Inez began her teaching career with the Perth Amboy Board of Education where she taught for over 30 years before retiring in 2006. Professionally she was a member of the Perth Amboy AFT and the NJEA.
She was a parishioner of Cathedral International Church in Perth Amboy. She was active over the years in the Seniors Ministry, the Educare Ministry and Sunday School. Outside of Church she was also active in the Perth Amboy Branch of the NAACP, achieving the status of Life Member. Inez was also the Branch Treasurer for many years.
Her favorite activities included, gardening, selling Avon, visiting Atlantic City as well as her beloved home state of Georgia.
Inez is predeceased by her husband Albert Adkins, Jr. (d. 1976), her sons Angelo A. Adkins (d. 2020) and Adolphus L. Adkins (d. 2020) and her beloved daughter-in-law Reca (d. 2020).
She leaves to cherish in her memory, her son Adrian Adkins of Boston, MA., her daughter Angela Adkins (close friend Jim) of Mt. Pocono, PA., her son Alex Adkins (Kisha) of Piscataway, ten grandchildren, Shivhon Adkins, Janelle Quarles, Janine Quarles, Brandon Payne, Aturo Adkins, Alex Adkins Jr., Josh Adkins, Andre Adkins, Shamiah Johnson, David Johnson, her Sister Pinkie Clarke of Atlanta, GA., and a host of family, cousins, nieces and nephews. Inez also leaves behind many lifelong friends that will miss her dearly.
Friends and relatives may call on Tuesday, January 12th, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N Main St.-at Riva Avenue, Milltown, NJ. Services will be private on Wednesday at Cathedral International Church in Perth Amboy. Burial will be at Shoreland Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hazlet.
