Grace Vivian Nelson, formerly of Piscataway, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 202 at The Residences of Quarry Hill, in Burlington VT, just hours before her 100th birthday, at the age of 99.997 years. She was well-known for her hard-working and generous nature.
She was born in Hartford, Connecticut on August 30, 1920. Her parents were Charles Mark Nelson and Anne (aka Annie) Tuxford Nelson. She lived in the Lake Nelson section of Piscataway since 1934.
She had been employed by Federal Civil Service for 13 years and by several commercial companies, most notable, Bristol-Myers Squibb of New Brunswick for 30 years, retiring in 1988.
During World War II, she served in the US Army for twenty-six months from 22 April 1944 to 10 July 1946 as a stenographer and court reporter. She was honourably discharged as a Technician Fourth Grade from WAC Detachment Headquarters Oise, APO 513, where she was assigned at Rheims and Paris France. She was a life member of the VFW Post 7504, Piscataway NJ.
She served for many years as secretary to the Piscataway League of Women Voters unit it disbanded in 1999. In recent years until 2010, she was employed by the Piscataway Township Senior Advisory Commission. She participated in Senior Center Art Classes, starting the hobby after retirement. Since 1960, her church affiliation had been with The Unitarian Society of 176 Tices Lane, East Brunswick NJ.
She's predeceased by her parents, Charles and Annie Nelson, and her brother and sister-in-law Arthur and Gloria Nelson.
Surviving is her nephew Dr. Mark Tuxford Nelson of Burlington, VT, her niece Roberta Nelson Shea of Marshfield Hills, MA; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Memorial Service will occur sometime after May 15, 2021. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Grace's honour to The Unitarian Society.
