Gloria Silverstein

Gloria Silverstein of East Brunswick passed away on Sunday, Feb 14, 2021, at Parker Nursing Home in Piscataway.

A beloved retired Kindergarten teacher and founding member of the East Brunswick Jewish Center – along with her husband Seymour – Gloria was born in Brooklyn, NY 91 years ago, the eldest of two children born to Abraham and Irene Katz.

She grew up in Brooklyn, attending Hunter High School, as well as Hunter College, majoring in Sociology and Education and graduating a semester early.

Gloria and Seymour were married soon after graduation in the summer of 1951. They had their first child in 1954 while living in Brooklyn. The young family moved to their East Brunswick home in 1957 where they raised their three children and continued to live for the remainder of their lives.

Before having children, Gloria pursued a career in early education, stepping back from her role as teacher to raise her children. She returned to teaching in 1968 for Milltown Board of Education as a Kindergarten teacher and continued there until her retirement in 1995. More than 20 years after her retirement former students as well as their parents would greet her warmly and thank her again for the care and attention they received.

Gloria is predeceased by her husband Seymour who passed in 2017 and survived by daughter and son-in-law, Susan Silverstein and Randolph Walerius of Bovina Center, NY.; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Silverstein and Elizabeth Lloyd-Owen of London, UK, and Mark and Anneke Silverstein of Antwerp; seven grandchildren, Avram, Jacob, Olivia, Phoebe, Henry, Noah and Isaiah; sister Lois Raz and nephew and niece Michael and Lauren of Staten Island.

Burial was private on Wednesday, February 17th at Floral Park Cemetery in South Brunswick. Arrangements are by The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N. Main St-at Riva Avenue, Milltown. You may sign the online condolence "guestbook" at www.crabiel.com
