George "Bill" Samson

June 8, 1922 — August 10, 2022

George William Samson, well known Navy artist, of Milltown, passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at the Veterans Home in Paramus. He was 100. Born and raised in Newark, he's lived in Milltown since 1954.

Bill served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a veteran of nine major naval engagements. He was a member of the Navy Recruiting Command RDAC Committee, the Navy Combat Art Team and Captain in the New Jersey Naval Militia. He also is a member of the American Legion Post 25 in Milltown and the Tin Can Sailors.

After WWII, he went to the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts on a GI bill. Before retiring in 1977, he was an artist for Kenny Press in Newark.

Bill's paintings are aboard numerous naval vessels, naval bases and are hanging at the US Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, the Normandy Museum in Caen France and the following government buildings in Washington DC: The Naval Historic Museum, Navy Combat Art Museum, Naval Submarine Command and the Pentagon. His paintings are also in many private collections. He worked primarily in oils and charcoal with strong emphasis on detail and historic accuracy.

Bill was also a member of the Milltown Seniors and Tabernacle Baptist Church in South River.

He's predeceased by his beloved wife Janice Marie (Freese) Samson (d. 1995), his sister Laura Norton and his brother William.

Surviving are his daughters and son-in-laws Marilyn and Mark Eaton of Ridgewood and Patricia and Alan D'Amico of Fanwood; his grandsons Christopher and Patrick D'Amico; and his great grandsons Jace Marciniak-Eaton and Kenneth Culp.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 17th, 10:00 am, at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N Main St.-at Riva Avenue, Milltown. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in North Brunswick. Friends and relatives may visit with the family on Wednesday, starting at 9:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 25 in Milltown. You may sign the online condolence "guestbook" at www.crabiel.com
