On Monday, April 4, 2022, Fares Khairallah Stephen passed away at his home in Ghosta, Lebanon at the age of 88.
Fares was a big man, with a big smile, and a big heart. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed being around others and had a great sense of humor. He had a gift for saying the funniest things at just the right moment, even though English was his second language.
He emigrated to the United States in 1955 at the age of 20, and lived with his uncle, who was a priest at Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral in Brooklyn, NY. He married Diane Sirgany at the age of 30, moved to New Jersey, and raised two sons, Kirk and Paul.
Fares had an entrepreneurial spirit and began Stephen Travel Agency in Manhattan chartering commercial flights between New York and Beirut in the 1960s & 1970s. Soon afterwards, he became a publisher of two Lebanese newspapers, the Al-Hoda, and The Lebanese American Journal.
He moved back to Lebanon to retire in 2004 and enjoyed his remaining years there with his family and friends. He was a proud man, especially of his family, his village, his faith, and his country, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 14th at 11:30 am at St. Sharbel Maronite Catholic Church, 7 Reeve Street, Somerset, NJ. You may sign the online condolence "guestbook" at www.crabiel.com
