Donald H. Petry II

Donald H. Petry II, formerly of Milltown, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at Centra State Hospital in Freehold. He was 55.

Born in New Brunswick, he lived in Milltown most of his life, before moving to Millstone Twp a few years ago.

Don was a retired Sergeant with the Milltown Police Department. He ran the DARE program at both Joyce Kilmer School and Our Lady of Lourdes School in Milltown.

After retirement he pursued his love of history. He received a BA in History from Southern New Hampshire University and was currently working on his Masters at Monmouth University.

Don loved everything Civil War and Military history, especially Gettysburg. He and his wife Lea extensively traveled to many historical sites which included many Revolutionary War and Civil War sites in the US as well as places in Europe including Normandy Beach and the Somme in France and Waterloo in Belgium. He was a collector of war re-enactment models. He had a Facebook page "Don's Military History Page" where he would show his latest models and talk about the historic sites he would visit. Seven of his photos appeared in the book "Gettysburg in Miniature: A Battle Overview Illustrated With Model Soldiers and Dioramas" by Scott L. Mingus and Tristan S. Mingus.

He was a member and on the Board of the Millstone Township Historical Society, a member of the Society for Military History in Lexington VA and the Civil War Trust in Washington DC. He earned his Eagle Scout badge with the Boy Scouts of America.

He's predeceased by his father Donald H. Petry (d. 2019)

Surviving is his wife of 31 years, Amelia "Lea" Savoia Petry; his mother Anita (Shaffer) Petry of Milltown; his sister and brother-in-law Heidi and David Corrente of Milltown; his nieces and nephews Lt. Jessica Strickland, Psy.D (Kevin), Jeremy Corrente, and Samantha, Sydney, Shawn and Shane Savoia.

Friends and relatives may call on Saturday, June 12th, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N Main St.-at Riva Avenue, Milltown. A Blessing will be held at 2:30 pm during the visitation. Cremation will be private.
