Al was a creative, curious intellect, troubleshooter, traveler, sailor and pirate to his thirteen grandchildren. He enjoyed his big, boisterous family among whom he loved to instigate a good debate or competition of sorts. The more cousins the better! He grew up in Staten Island, the eldest son of Alphonsus Xavier Egan Sr. and Ida Egan with his beloved sister and brother Eileen Ferguson and Martin Egan before moving to Milltown New Jersey in 1970. He married the love of his life, Penelope Boulougouras at 19 and before his twenty fifth birthday he had three children of his own, Dawn Marie Milburn, Lisa Egan and Jamie Egan. As with all he did, Al took on the task of fatherhood with love and enthusiasm. Al loved an adventure. This combined with his wonderful work ethic made him an admired patriarch of his family. After retiring from being an elevator constructor at age fifty-seven, Al threw himself into his retirement with gusto, never missing an opportunity to be intellectually or physically challenged. He filled his days with mountains of books, time with beloved friends and family on bikes, in tennis courts, aboard boats and around poker and dinner tables. He traveled every chance he could get to cities, beaches, ski mountains and deserts sheltering in resorts and under tents. Mostly, Al loved to play! His favorite companions alongside his wife, children and puppies were his grandchildren. In the words of his first born grandson, "I was blessed to grow up around the corner from my Pop Pop. Blessed for the countless hours spent on his lap growing up as he read Dr. Seuss Books or blew my mind with his creativity and usual pirate tales. I'm almost 100% positive my grandpa was a pirate in another life, if not he had an unfathomable imagination." Al had a wonderful life, according to him. Al was a steadfast and loyal husband, father and friend. We wish him well as he sets sail on his latest adventure and feel blessed to be inspired by his wonderful example.
Alphonsus Xavier Egan is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Penny Egan, his children Dawn Milburn, Lisa Egan and James Egan all whom had the privilege of being with him at the time of his death.
